How do I configure the firewall?
article ID: 2023477
Configuration of the firewall on the server:
When you have chosen server installation, the system will automatically open a port for the SQL server in Windows Firewall, if this is used. You will find the settings for this in the Windows Control Panel, under Windows Firewall under the Exceptions tab. If you use Windows Firewall, it is not necessary to change anything manually.
If you use other software for a Firewall, you need to add the exceptions manually. Below you will find the configuration of the Windows Firewall.
The procedure to manually add the values can vary for different programs, but the exceptions that need to be added are the same for every program. For instructions for your program, please refer to program support of your firewall.
Three settings have been added under Exceptions: SQL(port exeption), sqlbrowser.exe(program) and sqlserver.exe(program).
If these have to be added manually, you must select Add Port to add SQL and Add Program to add sqlbrowser and sqlserver.exe.
SQL: Port 1433/TCP
sqlbrowser.exe: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Shared\sqlbrowser.exe
Select Add Program, click Browse and double click sqlservr.exe found under the following paths:
SQL Server 2005:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.2\MSSQL\Binn\
SQL Server 2008:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10_50."instance name"\MSSQL\Binn
(For Example: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10_50.MAMUT\MSSQL\Binn)
